Police confirm they are investigating both deaths but few details have been released and a spokesperson refused to comment when contacted by MiningNews.net.
It is alleged the first worker died after being involved in an off-shift fight at the mine’s village on May 19.
Reports in the West Australian state that another worker involved in last month’s altercation is believed to have taken his own life late last week.
AngloGold Ashanti refused to comment on the latest fatality but a spokesperson for the company confirmed that the first worker passed away last month at Tropicana while off duty.
“Counsellors were flown to site and have continued to support employees. Mining operations were shut down the morning after the employee passed away,” the spokesperson said but could not comment on the latest death of a Macmahon Holdings worker, which happened offsite in Perth.
In a statement to MiningNews.net a Macmahon spokesperson confirmed that the second death occurred a week after the first, while the worker was on a rostered break away from the mine.
“The deaths are being investigated separately by the police and we are doing everything we can to assist with these investigations,” the spokesperson said.
“As this is a police matter it is inappropriate for us to comment further.
“We are deeply saddened by this and are working hard to understand what has occurred.
“We are also working closely with our client and the relevant authorities.
“Our focus continues to be on the safety and health of our workforce and providing support to the families involved.”
The Department of Mines and Petroleum is not investigating the matter as it is not linked to the mine’s operations.
Tropicana, a 70:30 joint venture between AngloGold and Independence Group, is one of Australia’s largest gold mines after starting production late last year.
The mine is 330km northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.
