The mine, 900 kilometres north of Port Moresby in the New Ireland province of Papua New Guinea, has contracted SkillsTech Australia to train staff to Australian standards.
The program will see SkillsTech delivering Certificate II to Certificate V in water quality management and Certificate II and Certificate III in waste water and sewer training to the Lihir Gold workforce.
The training is in line with the National Training Information Service (NTIS) National Water Package standard NWP07.
"The Lihir Gold mine is situated in a tropical paradise and it's right on the coastline, with some mining underwater," SkillsTech trainer Don Mackay said.
"The locals are dependent on fishing, so their livelihood depends on water quality."
Mackay said the project involved training more than 50 employees.
"The project is making good progress with several workers about to graduate with their Certificate III," he said.
The SkillsTech Australia training agreement follows the extension of TAFE Queensland Mining Services' two-year contract to oversee workforce training for Lihir Gold's 150 processing plant workers.
Lihir Gold was trading at $3.32 today following a 4.53% increase in morning trade.
