This is the third consecutive year that Evolution has supplied the gold to make the Melbourne Cup trophy, but the first time the gold has come from one of its Queensland operations.
The Melbourne Cup trophy is valued at $200,000, is made from 18-carat gold and contains 44 pieces that are hand spun over a 250-hour production process. Gold used to make the trophy was mined and processed at Mt Rawdon and refined at ABC Bullion's refinery in inner Sydney.
"Evolution is honoured to once again play a part in producing this iconic trophy in Australian racing for the Victorian Racing Commission with our refining partners ABC Bullion," Evolution executive chairman Jake Klein said.
"On behalf of our 250 people at Mt Rawdon more than 700 people across Queensland, it will be a real thrill to know that Australia has stopped to watch horses from around the world compete for a trophy with its origins near Mt Perry within the North Burnett Regional Council area."
The finished product visited Mt Rawdon as part of the Melbourne Cup's annual Australian tour.
Queensland Resources Council chief executive Ian Macfarlane said the news highlighted the importance of the resources sector to the state.
"The first Tuesday in November is an important day in the calendar for Queenslanders, and it will be even more important with Queensland gold in the Melbourne Cup this year," he said.
"I congratulate the men and women working at Evolution Mining who have already backed the winner, igniting Mt Perry and North Burnett's community pride in playing an important role in one of Australia's most iconic sporting events. This highlights once again the critical role of resources in Queensland."
Kirkland Lake Gold CEO Tony Makuch recently announced that the 2020 Melbourne Cup would be made using gold from the Fosterville mine in Victoria.
