The induction and supervisor training program has been designed and developed by BHP's ADP team, in collaboration with the SKM learning centre.

The aim of the five-day training course is to streamline the pre-deployment process and invest in quality training prior to employees accessing BHP Billiton Iron Ore's project work sites and before supervisors take responsibility for teams on site.

Health, safety, environment and risk manager for BHP Billiton's ADP in WA, Richard Keys, said the training programs are conducted at the purpose-built SKM learning centre at Perth's domestic airport.

Keys said the airport location, to service the fly-in fly-out schedules of project personnel immediately before site deployment, was a strategic advantage.

"The opportunity to complete a quality induction, recently incorporating the Safety Awareness Course for Construction Blue Card, and then participants fly directly to site on the same day, is a definite advantage," Keys said.

"But the overriding priority is to ensure that zero harm is achieved. Our quality induction and training programs ensure that all personnel working on the projects are trained and comply with our procedures, rules and processes to eliminate hazards and risks in the workplace and to fully understand their responsibilities and accountabilities whilst at work.

He said the multi-faceted training program includes occupational health and safety, driver training, behavioural-based safety, environmental awareness, health and personal fitness, and incorporates legislative requirements, and culture and heritage training.

"We also recognise that supervisors play a key role in achieving site health, safety and environment (HSE) goals and the ADP projects are well supported through the development of the HSE leaders program.

To date, more than 2000 BHP project personnel have attended these and similar courses.

SKM is also currently delivering various studies and engineering, procurement and construction management services in a joint venture with Fluor, for BHP Billiton Iron Ore's rapid growth projects 4 and 5.
