"It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news that IGO managing director and CEO Peter Bradford passed away over the weekend," IGO said.

"Peter was an inspirational leader to our people, was highly respected in the mining industry, and leaves behind an incredible legacy."

IGO expressed its condolences to his wife Vicki, his five children and granddaughter.

"We will remember Peter as a kind-hearted leader who put our people first and created a unique culture that we are all proud of," it said.

"His exceptional leadership led IGO to become an ASX 100 company with a clear focus and purpose to make a difference. He advocated for gender diversity and equity, had a strong belief in developing the next generation and gave back to the mining industry in so many ways.

"We will miss him and know this is an immense loss for his family, our IGO family and the mining industry."

Bradford, 64, was a metallurgist and was also the president of AMEC.

He was named CEO of the Year in the 2021 MNN Awards.
