Dumble will take over from Tom Palmer, who has been promoted to chief operating officer of the company.
Newmont CEO Gary Goldberg said Dumble was an accomplished business leader with 34 years of experience in mining.
“His background includes managing successful operations, building projects on time and on budget, and significantly improving performance for some of the world’s leading mining companies,” he said.
“Stephen’s track record of driving transformational change in the areas of safety, productivity, and social and environmental responsibility make him the right leader to build on the region’s strong performance, and to deliver our strategy – which is to improve the underlying business, strengthen the portfolio and create value for shareholders and other stakeholders.”
Dumble’s previous roles include BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance asset president and president of the Queensland Resources Council.
He has a chemical engineering degree from Curtin University in Perth, where he will be based for his new role.
Newmont is Australia’s largest gold producer by ounces, and a $US120 million expansion of the Tanami mine in the Northern Territory is currently underway.
The company also appointed former Harmony Gold COO Alwyn Pretorius as head of its African business.
