The WA government has also reinstated the G2G Pass system it introduced to allow travel for approved people between regions during the initial COVID-19 lockdown last year.
Mine workers are considered essential workers.
They were allowed to leave the Perth, Peel and South West regions to travel to other parts of the state for work under the initial lockdown rules.
Those rules have been refined to define an essential fly-in, fly-out or drive-in, drive out worker to be one who is required for industry or business continuity and maintenance of competitive operation where the service is time-critical, or who is responsible for critical maintenance or repair of infrastructure critical to a region of, or to, Western Australia.
The government has asked the mining industry to continue its operations with the minimum number of workers available under these new requirements.
For example, this may include extending rosters for employees already on site temporarily until the end of the five-day lockdown and managing operations with the workforce on site.
The direction allows for FIFO workers to return home by the most direct route possible, and still allow persons to leave the region to complete essential work or to transport an essential worker.
Major miners have already agreed to minimise FIFO movements out of Perth to essential staff.
The hard lockdown was put in place at 6pm on January 31 due to a security guard in a quarantine hotel testing positive to the far more transmissible UK strain of COVID-19.
It is expected to last until at least 6pm February 5.
So far there have been no locally acquired COVID-19 cases in WA.
The G2G Pass system has been updated to make applications for intrastate travel in WA to allow people to travel through regions in lockdown.
A valid G2G Pass has to be presented at checkpoints in WA.
All workers travelling must have appropriate evidence from their employer to demonstrate their travel and their work is essential for continued operations.
It is strongly recommended essential workers wear their uniforms and carry identification as well as have contact details for company personnel to help them should issues be experienced during their essential travel.
Essential workers also have to wear masks from when they leave their place of residence including while they are at work.
The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies said it appreciated the leadership shown by member companies reviewing internal controls and quickly reinstituting previous measures to reduce the potential for spread, and to keep their employees and communities safe.
"It is critically important that our industry work together to continue to treat these matters with the utmost seriousness," it said.
Gold producer Westgold Resources said it had suspended all FIFO flights for the week, meaning workers would have to remain onsite until the end of the lockdown.
