The PNG national flew to Lihir Island from Port Moresby on July 30.

As per Newcrest protocol, all arrivals are isolated in a designated camp for a 14-day mandatory isolation period and are tested for COVID-19 three times.

The individual is asymptomatic and has been moved from the isolation camp into a separate isolation and treatment facility.

The people who travelled with the infected worker remain in isolation and all have tested negative for COVID-19.

Mine operations continue unaffected.

It comes after a virus outbreak at the Ok Tedi copper-gold operation on mainland PNG last week closed the mine for at least 14 days.

Seven Ok Tedi employees have tested positive for COVID-19.

It is the first case of COVID-19 for Newcrest across its operations in Australia, PNG and Canada.

The company established a A$20 million Community Support Fund in March to assist its local communities with the challenges associated with the pandemic.
