SKILLS shortages in the Australian resources sector could be alleviated by flying in reinforcements in the form of ex-servicemen from the British armed forces.

Deep cuts in the number of service personnel employed across the UK Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force has resulted in large numbers of highly trained and experienced military personnel finding themselves without a job.

Australian employers will be able to select from a pool of these qualified and experienced ex-servicemen candidates who meet all the requirements for the 457 visa, according to Firefox Talent.

"The military redundancy program in the UK offers up a really unique pool of highly trained, talented and experienced individuals who represent many of the key skills and trades,” Firefox chief executive Nick Sutton said.

With the prospect of a sluggish economy back in the UK and no immediate opportunities to absorb this pool of surplus manpower, Firefox Talent is initially attempting to meet the demand for skilled personnel in Western Australia with the UK ex-servicemen.

“Each candidate will have benefitted from military service and been through a demanding and challenging selection and development process, often over many years,” Sutton said. “Many will have experienced working in challenging environments such as Afghanistan and Iraq where their skills, professionalism and ability to adapt will have been tested to the extreme.’’

While a number of candidates will be on the cusp of leaving the military over the coming months, many others will have already moved into civilian life and therefore have gained experience of working for private companies both in the UK and internationally, he said.

“Whatever their personal circumstances, each individual will share a highly professional background, the ability to adapt to new situations very quickly and management, leadership and communication skills that come as standard.”
