The NASDAQ gained 0.6% to close at 4017 points. It is the first time in 13 years it has closed over the 4000 mark.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was relatively flat, edging nominally higher to a new high of 16072 points, while the S&P 500 rose 0.01% to 1802 points.
Shares in Toronto, however, were 0.9% weaker at 13,349 points.
European markets closed mostly lower as well, including the Euro Stoxx, down 0.3% to 3062 points, and France’s CAC 40 benchmark, down 0.6% at 4277.
The ASX is set to open lower, with the SPI 200 Futures index trading 18 points lower this morning at 5365 and some softness in commodity pricing.
London metals were mostly down, with copper trading 0.5% lower at $US7061 per tonne and zinc losing 0.8% to $1858/t.
Comex gold was up 0.1% to $1242 per ounce while spot iron ore was down 0.4% at $135.90/t.
West Texas intermediate crude oil fell 0.3% to $93.68 a barrel.
The Australian dollar was last trading at $91.28c.
