Under the deal Hanrahan Smith will be recommended as the preferred recruitment firm for WASM graduates. In return, the company will donate a percentage of their placement fees to the WASM Graduates’ Association Scholarship.

“If you look at the average salary packet sizes of a WASM graduate, you are probably looking at $A150,000-$200,000 and if you look at these placement fees where companies charge 15%, that’s a $30,000 placement,” WASMGA president Bill Beament said.

“If we could just get a portion of that then it would go a long way to creating a sustainable association.”

Funds donated to the WASMGA will be used to support students through scholarship and mentoring programs, maintaining the organisation, and supporting students while they study at the Kalgoorlie campus.

Beament, who also serves as Northern Star Resources’ managing director, said the organisation wanted to be a not-for-profit organisation that was not constantly asking for donations.

“When I came on as president two years ago, I set about looking at ways to form business ventures inside the organisation that provides a long-term revenue source to maintain the organisation and its causes,” he said.

“One of the key things that we wanted to identify was that our network in the mining industry is extensive so we thought we should be able to leverage off that.

“WASM graduates represent around 30% of all mining disciplined graduates in the Australian resources sector and are in senior executive positions in the industry. They are the decision makers.”

Hanrahan Smith director Paul Hanrahan welcomed the partnership and said it gave the firm a chance to reinvest in the sector.

“We feel this partnership provides a sound vehicle for us to put something back into the industry at a grass roots level in a sustainable manner,” he said.
