SPOT gold hit a record $US898.60 an ounce in morning trade, before retreating to $895.60/oz this afternoon. Despite the record, gold plays remained mixed with Newcrest Mining adding 50c to close at $38.49, while Centamin Egypt fell 10.5c to $1.465.
